The cultural heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia is also made up of castles and other types of fortifications. Being a border region, many such buildings were erected at the exits of valleys, at the crossroads of ancient routes, in harbors, and on mountain slopes, making it one of the areas with the highest number of castles in Italy.
Here, in this setting, stands La Brunelde Domus Magna, a fortified residence erected on a hill overlooking the town of Fagagna.
The origins of La Brunelde Domus Magna are very ancient, probably dating back to pre-Roman times. The building has an enthralling background story: erected on the ruins of a Roman country-military villa, it is historically bound to the Counts of Arcano. In Lombard times, in the 8th century and during the whole of the Middle Ages, it was a guard tower and in the 16th century it was turned into a fortified residence; in the 19th century it became the hunting residence of the Counts of Arcano, and last century it was again turned into a country residence.
