18 rooms, 800 years of history
The exceptionality and uniqueness of Matera is constituted by the "Sassi" district, a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO since 1993.
It is a heritage considered an expression of an ancient life from the protohistoric civilizations of the Bronze Age to the monastic communities, up to to the metropolitan marginality where one of the most impressive epics of the southern peasant enslaved to the large estates of this land was concentrated and consumed.
The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the Civita, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160 square meters) and an ancient church, the “Cripta della Civita”, now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features.
Their approach to conserving the interiors would involve a minimalist approach, using plain furnishing. Often the furniture has been built into the structure to maintain a continuity of form and function with the original building. Given the irregular surfaces, if they introduced free standing furniture it would be unstable, and feel out of context.
Their objective was to make the minimum intervention to the interior, letting the cave interior express itself, so lights were hidden. Where needed, and with reference to the lives once lived in these caves, they used recycled materials to build furniture (cupboards, chairs, desks). Their aim was that the simplicity of form, fusing with the structure, would not interrupt the dramatic setting of the Sassi. They wanted their changes to form a dialogue with the cityscape and its history.
